- LOCAL PRESS (The Guardian) — Facing threats of mass deportations in the United States, local media play a key role in informing affected people and providing them with the resources they need to better understand their rights. More than just a news outlet, these media become an essential service for their communities.
- LOCAL NEWS (RMPBS) — In Colorado, Facebook pages run by volunteers are filling the void left by local news outlets that have disappeared in some areas. Though the people managing these pages lack the time—or the desire—to do on-the-ground reporting, they're committed to serious editorial work by finding reliable sources and limiting promotional content.
- AI (Libération/Next) — This joint investigation by Libération and Next uncovered an invasion of hundreds of AI-generated websites flooding the web with fake journalists and plagiarized content. Beyond the importance of the subject matter, this work also demonstrates the value of pooling resources between newsrooms to produce quality journalism.
- AI (Ars Technica) — On YouTube, creators are seeing their videos plagiarized by AI. How to fight back? YouTuber f4mi plans to strike back and sabotage these copies by inserting misleading captions that are clearly readable by bots but invisible to humans.
- EDITORIAL (Frustration) — When the press covers rural areas, it sometimes swings between misery-mongering and folklorization. Picturesque backdrops where people come to breathe a "breath of fresh air" and which are merely waiting to be modernized by young Parisian entrepreneurs. An "urban gaze" symptomatic of media concentration in the capital that helps obscure certain real issues.
- GUIDE (ProPublica) — ProPublica's newsroom has repeatedly covered evictions of homeless people and the destruction of their encampments. Based on those experiences, the outlet created a guide for journalists that compiles best practices for reporting and conducting interviews in the field.
- MODEL (Poynter) — After being fired for attempting to unionize, the team at the Long Beach Post created their own media outlet, this time owned by its employees. A model also adopted by 404 Media and Defector that is gaining renewed interest among journalists advocating for editorial independence in the face of unchecked profit-driven logic.
- TOOLS (Nieman Lab) — Once ordered by the pallet by newsrooms, the reporter's notebook is giving way to digital tools. Yet it remains a precious ally: spared from technical failures, it helps us better memorize quotations and retains — let's face it — a certain charm.
P.S.: Do you have a notebook and aren't (too) ashamed of its condition or contents? The Nieman Lab would love to take a look and talk about it with you!
