It's rolling

Media outlets that use video to drive conversions—and market intelligence, of course.

No. 82 — It's a Wrap
It's May 16, 2024, and you're reading the newsletter from Médianes.

Hello, everyone,

With Christelle Perrin, the artistic director of Médianes, when we have time, we like to make videos. It’s all very experimental: we grab a phone, cobble together a tripod out of a couple of pieces of cardboard, and explain why we liked a particular magazine or book.

Not only are these videos fun to make, but they’re also easy to share and allow us to reach audiences who weren’t familiar with us before. Want to give it a try? Today, we’re sharing three examples of media outlets that use video on social media to attract new audiences.

For those who prefer the written word to the camera, this issue features an article by Agathe Kupfer on media outlets that highlight their journalists’ biographies. Also on the agenda: the symbolic power of print, perch-like workstations, *The Office*, and, of course, job listings.

Enjoy the read,

— MARINE SLAVITCH, JOURNALIST AT MÉDIANES

IDEAS FOR YOUR MEDIA

There’s nothing quite like video on social media for reaching new audiences. Whether you’re looking to attract a younger audience, introduce your media to a wider audience, or offer more engaging content as a starting point, online video can be a great way to come across as accessible and appealing.

Adapting to the tone of the platforms

Shortly after its launch, the investigative business news outlet L’Informé had racked up more than two million views for four videos posted on TikTok. While not frivolous, the topics are tailored to what works on the platform: revelations about reality TV contestants, YouTubers, TV hosts, or public figures. It’s a winning formula for showcasing existing content while making it accessible.

Rely on Popular Figures

Several France Télévisions hosts have TikTok accounts, including Élise Lucet and Laurent Delahousse. These TikTok accounts complement the network’s programming. For example, following the broadcast of a program on identity theft, Élise Lucet shared three tips on how to avoid becoming a victim. France Télévisions uses this platform to foster a sense of trust and connection with its star presenters, particularly by offering behind-the-scenes glimpses.

Adopt a partnership-based approach

Since last September, the online media outlet Vert (in partnership with Médianes) has been collaborating with Konbini with the goal of reaching a “broader audience with less expertise in environmental issues.” Every two weeks, Loup Espargilière, co-founder of Vert, hosts a short column that aims to analyze current events through an environmental lens. Before entering into this partnership, Vert notes that it sought the opinion of its club members, 85% of whom voted in favor of it.

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT

This month saw the release of *Les Jours*'s new newsletter, “Scrountch,” a high-energy digest of the publication’s content, featuring several sections, news briefs, and lively columns.

We designed the layout of this newsletter to be consistent with Les Jours’ visual identity, so that its form would echo its content: vibrant colors and dynamic shapes arranged around a sectioned layout that we hope is clear, along with a mix of fonts that we hope is pleasant to read.

To get an idea, there's only one thing to do: sign up for Scrountch.

We're out of paper.

MARIE DESHAYES / THE MEDIA REVIEW

It’s no secret: since the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine, paper prices have skyrocketed. So how can we adapt? Reducing page counts, changing formats, and making editorial choices… While some media outlets are cutting costs to limit the damage, others continue to rely on print for its symbolic power and readers’ attachment to the medium.

We have to imagine the media being happy

FABRICE DELAYE, MATHILDE BOUSSION, and PIERRE ALONSO / HEIDI.NEWS

To celebrate its fifth anniversary, the Swiss online media outlet Heidi.news is sharing the spotlight by featuring happy journalists and media founders. Vert, Axios, The Continent, Tortoise… These are all valuable insights from media outlets that have found their audience and show that, in fact, there’s still a lot of work to be done.

Let's move on to the bios

AGATHE KUPFER / MEDIANES.ORG

Although rarely used in France, biographies on news websites allow readers to learn more about the journalists behind the articles (their favorite topics, areas of expertise, journalistic ethics, etc.). Mediapart and The New York Times explain how this tool helps them build trust with their readers while encouraging engagement.
