No. 58 — Do you have access to this article?
Today is June 8, 2023, and you are reading the newsletter from Médianes.
Today, the formula is
Hello, everyone,
Last week, we were in Nantes for Web2day, a festival of innovation and digital technology, where we helped organize and host a special media day. And since we’re nice, we’ve put together this article to summarize what was discussed during the day.
Back to this issue. Today, we’re sharing three ideas for managing subscription sharing for your publication: by developing different subscription plans tailored to each person’s situation, by offering free articles from time to time, or by educating your readers.
And in our roundup: audio podcasts to re-live the game alongside sports journalists, the AJL’s 10th anniversary, a great professional calendar, and job listings, of course.
Enjoy the read,

Ideas for Your Media
While Netflix has recently introduced new policies regarding account sharing, what about your media outlets? Rather than viewing these practices as a scourge, some prefer to take an educational approach—or even use them as an opportunity to reach new audiences.
Donate Items
When a subscriber to Arrêt sur images (ASI) or Mediapart wants to share an article with a friend or family member, all they have to do is select the “Give as a Gift” option. The recipient will then receive an email inviting them to subscribe. This is an effective way to reach readers who are interested but not yet subscribers. Another option offered by ASI, as well as by Les Jours during their subscription campaign, is the ability to make certain articles available through a voting system.
Offer Bundles
In 2019, Le Monde implemented new policies to limit the number of simultaneous logins on a single account. Since then, the newspaper has introduced tailored—though more expensive—subscription plans, such as the “Family” subscription, which allows users to create up to four accounts. L’Équipe and Le Figaro also offer similar subscriptions. However, this approach remains complex and costly to implement.
Demonstrate teaching skills
In response to the regular—and sometimes excessive—sharing of its articles on social media, Sud-Ouest has decided to publish a reminder of best practices. The newspaper encourages its readers not to share its full-length, paywalled articles, while noting that sharing excerpts is still permitted. This approach has been emulated by L’Union, which states that it must “call a few overzealous internet users to order” on social media, while still “taking an educational approach.”

Spotlight on a Project
Welcome to the Club! We are pleased to be working with the team at the environmental media outlet Vert on a membership drive and the launch of its Club.
With more than 35,000 subscribers to its daily newsletter, 40,000 followers on LinkedIn, and more than 55,000 on Instagram, the media outlet’s goal is now to recruit 2,000 regular donors by June 18. Its objectives? To strengthen its team, ensure its independence, and develop numerous projects.

THE STRIKE
After the final whistle of a sporting event, there’s often a lull in media coverage. Yet this is precisely when fans are most eager to discuss and make sense of the outcome of a game. To meet this need, The Athletic typically hosts an audio chat—which is later turned into a podcast—where journalists can break down the game with subscribers.
