No. 54 — Le bigdil
Today is April 13, 2023, and you're reading the newsletter from Médianes.

Today, we reap what we sow.

Hello, everyone,

As we slowly recover from the second edition of the Festival Imprimé, co-organized with Revue Far Ouest, we would like to express our heartfelt thanks for your support. Thanks to you, this event—which aims to champion socially conscious journalism—was once again a great success.

Over the course of five days, from March 28 to April 1, we brought together more than 400 people on-site, 5,000 online, and guided nearly 500 students through media literacy workshops. Please feel free to send us your feedback!

Back on the shelves. Today, we’re tackling the topic of press subsidies, and we’ll be sharing some valuable resources with you. These can help fund your media outlet’s growth and investments in the short, medium, or long term.

Enjoy the read,

— Marine Doux and Baptiste Thevelein

Why not?

Ideas for Your Media

Direct government subsidies to the press amount to approximately 100 million euros per year—most of which goes to large media conglomerates. Beyond the Ministry of Culture, the concept of press subsidies encompasses numerous programs, each with its own nuances.

Do Your Research

Before jumping in, it’s always helpful to know what you’re getting into. The ministry publishes an annual list of grant recipients, along with the amounts awarded and the programs used. This is a valuable resource for comparing yourself to others and preparing your applications. Obtaining a CPPAP number is sometimes a prerequisite that also allows you to receive indirect grants.

Take a step to the side

Straddling the line between support for the cultural industries and more traditional businesses, the media can also count on specific programs, some of which are little known. The French Center for Copyright, for example, regularly supports media companies. The same is true of the National Book Center, which issues calls for proposals aimed at magazines.

Partner Up or Innovate

Most forms of support for the press are tied to the implementation of an investment project, the main one being the FSDP. Others support the establishment and operation of the organization, such as the well-known “Bourse à l’émergence.” Finally, European calls for proposals dedicated to the media fund the creation of new projects bringing together organizations from different countries.

Spotlight on a Project

We worked with Isabel Del Real, who, following her bike trip from Brittany to Tehran, created a graphic novel chronicling her journey. After a successful pre-sale campaign on KissKissBankBank, we built her online store and laid out the 280-page graphic novel, which is still available for order.

"Plouheran" is scheduled for release in May. Isabel recently appeared on the podcast *Les Baladeurs des Others* and on *Brut*.

PODCASTS ON YOUTUBE

Most podcast listeners prefer to watch podcasts on YouTube rather than listen to their audio versions. This is interesting, given that YouTube makes it easier for creators to generate advertising revenue than other platforms. Especially since video versions of podcasts tend to be more like recordings than large-scale productions.

FOR A MORE ENGAGED AUDIENCE

There are several ways to build audience loyalty. While Konbini is trying to personalize the user experience by creating micro-communities on Twitch, L’Équipe is focusing on live discussions with its star journalists. For their part, Le Parisien and franceinfo prefer to develop new gaming pages. The go-to format? Quizzes—they’re inexpensive and highly engaging.

For its second edition, the Festival Imprimé focused on collectively finding ways to build new models of society. Here’s a summary.
