A New Season

Hello, everyone,

Here at Médianes, the return of spring has us feeling inspired to start fresh: that’s perfect timing, since we’re just getting started on a redesign project that will continue through the summer. So our weeks are filled with workshops focused on our goals, our editorial content, and a redesign of our website that’s slowly taking shape. We can’t wait to show you the progress we’re making!

Over at Sphera, our European media network, exciting developments are also on the horizon: part of the team has just returned from a seminar in Madrid with all members of the network to lay the groundwork for the project’s fifth phase.

Among our upcoming events, we’ll be in Perugia, Italy, next month for the International Journalism Festival, April 10–12, where we’re hosting a festive evening. We’d love to see you there!

We'd also like to take this opportunity to welcome Siméon Brand, who is joining us as an intern project officer working on support-related topics. We'd also like to announce that this newsletter is being taken over by Mathilde Carlier, in charge of communications at Médianes. It was previously written by Juliette Cahen, editorial manager, who is moving on to new horizons after 3 years at Médianes.

Don't worry—we're sticking to our usual routine! On the agenda for this issue: recommendations for greater diversity in newsrooms, an upcoming trip to Perugia, and a new collaboration with Le Monde.

Enjoy the read,

— Mathilde Carlier, Project Manager

Racism in Newsrooms: AJAR’s 12 Recommendations

Founded in 2023, the Association of Anti-Racist and People of Color Journalists (AJAR) works to promote greater diversity within French newsrooms, where journalists of color remain underrepresented and are victims of discrimination.

To encourage media outlets to change their practices, the association has developed a series of concrete recommendations based on its fieldwork with newsrooms. To explore solutions that newsrooms can implement, we spoke with Khedidja Zerouali, a journalist at Mediapart and co-founder of AJAR, to discuss how these recommendations can be applied in practice within media organizations.
