Editorial Strategy

Since 2020, we have been helping media outlets, NGOs, and institutions clarify their editorial direction and develop their content formats to strengthen their unique identity and grow their audiences.

Would you like to clarify your editorial direction, launch a new format, or reposition your media outlet? Tell us more about your project by filling out our form. We’ll get back to you shortly.

Our approach

A clear editorial line is often taken for granted. In reality, it’s frequently implicit, interpreted differently by each person, and can get lost as the media evolves. At [company name]Médianes, however, we see it as the foundation of any media project: without it, neither marketing nor technology can build a coherent model.

We help media organizations articulate what makes them unique, translate that into concrete formats, and keep it relevant over time as their audiences and context evolve.

We advocate a product-oriented approach to media that integrates journalism, design, marketing, technology, and management to ensure consistency between editorial content and the means to sustain it financially.

Our services

From defining your editorial direction to redesigning your formats, here’s how we work to strengthen your editorial strategy.

Clarify Your Editorial Line

A strong editorial voice is more than just a marketing positioning—it’s what shapes your perspective on the world, your values, and the way you convey them through your content. We help you articulate it clearly—both in writing and in your editorial practices—so that it guides the decisions of the entire team, from design to marketing.

We applied this method to our own magazine, *Pays*, which we co-founded in 2020: each issue is devoted to a single region, an approach that shapes the project’s entire editorial direction.

Define a publishing strategy

Posting regularly isn't enough: the frequency, channels, and formats you choose must also align with your editorial line and your audience's expectations. We help you build a cohesive publishing strategy, from your editorial calendar to your content prioritization.

From 2020 to 2022, we helped the feminist magazine and publishing house La Déferlante develop its strategy across the magazine, newsletter, and social media: a pre-sale schedule, key messages for each issue, and campaign events.

Developing new editorial products

Newsletters, podcasts, video formats, and thematic verticals: every new editorial product must meet a specific need of your audience without diluting your identity. We support you from the initial idea through to the operational framework, to design formats that will attract a loyal audience over the long term.

In 2023, we supported the launch of the literary magazine Kometa, from the initial idea through the crowdfunding campaign: more than 5,000 pre-orders, compared to an initial goal of 300. In 2024, the investigative media outlet Disclose reached out to us to launch new newsletters, complete with tools designed to empower the team to operate independently.

Revamp existing formats

A format that’s losing steam doesn’t always have to be abandoned: it can be revamped to win back its audience or adapted to new uses. We help you identify what’s no longer working and design a new version that retains what made it strong.

In 2025, we redesigned the newsletter for the Louie Media podcast studio: we reviewed previous issues, developed a new editorial structure, and created a new layout designed to encourage sharing.

Structuring an Editorial Collaboration

Working across multiple newsrooms, in multiple languages, or across multiple countries can’t be done on the fly: it requires clear guidelines for editorial collaboration, an organizational structure that doesn’t stifle individual identities, and an editor-in-chief capable of mediating. We help you structure these collaborations, from establishing common editorial guidelines to day-to-day management.

Since 2024, we have been coordinating Sphera, a network of ten independent media outlets in seven European countries, with a shared editorial team and collaborative productions in multiple languages. Together with Revue Far Ouest, we have co-produced the Festival Imprimé from start to finish—an annual event dedicated to socially conscious journalism in Bordeaux. Over its first three editions (2022–2024), the festival drew nearly 10,000 people, both in person and online.

Clarify Your Editorial Structure

Producing content as a team—whether internally or with external contributors—requires clear organization: who writes, who edits, who approves, and according to what schedule. Without this, the production process can quickly become a source of tension or delays. We help you clarify these workflows, from assignment to publication.

In 2025, the City of Paris asked us to support its communications department (55 professionals): jointly developing production workflows, establishing a new role for an editorial lead, and creating a clear matrix of responsibilities.

Fund the mission

Our support services are customizable, flexible, and eligible for funding. Prices start at €850 (excluding tax) for a mentoring assignment.

Depending on your situation, they may be funded:

  • through a campaign or launch budget,
  • through a public or private grant,
  • or covered as part of vocational training, if the support takes the form of a training program. Médianes is a Qualiopi-accredited training organization, which allows for funding through your OPCO.

Frequently asked questions

What types of organizations do you work with?

Media outlets, organizations, institutions, local governments, associations… We work with a wide range of entities, while adhering to the values and standards set forth in our editorial and ethical charter.

How can you work with us?

Rather than providing a standard quote, we prefer to speak with you first: every project is different, and an initial discussion allows us to fully understand your needs, your situation, and your goals before proposing a solution that’s right for you. Fill out our support request form, and we’ll get back to you shortly.

What kinds of assignments do you handle?

Our services cover all the areas of expertise needed to develop a media outlet, an NGO, or an institution: editorial positioning and audience analysis, fundraising campaigns, business model development, website creation or redesign, visual identity, administrative support and grant seeking, and organizational and HR structuring. Find details about our areas of expertise on our Services page.

How long does a coaching program last?

Our services are tailored to your needs. Some projects last just a few days or weeks to address a specific need—such as strategic planning, a graphic redesign, or a training module. Others span several months or even years when it comes to providing ongoing support for a project. We’ll work with you to develop the approach that best fits your schedule and budget.

What is Qualiopi certification?

By earning Qualiopi certification, Médianes has received recognition for the quality of the process it has implemented for its training programs. The goal is both to guarantee the high quality of the training we offer and to enable you to receive training through professional training assistance.

How can I pay for coaching or training?

Our support services are flexible and designed to fit your budget and your project. They can be funded with your own resources, through a public or private grant, or covered as part of vocational training when they take the form of a training program (Médianes is a Qualiopi-certified training organization).

In this case, there are several options available depending on your status, including your OPCO if you are an employee (AFDAS in the media sector), the AFDAS freelance fund if you are a freelance journalist, assistance from France Travail, SCAM grants, your training insurance fund if you are self-employed, or an installment plan using your own funds.

Not sure where to start? Let's talk: we'll help you identify the right format and funding option. Fill out our support request form so we can understand your project.

Are Médianes training courses eligible for the CPF?

No, not yet: they are not recognized by France Compétences under the RNCP. We hope to successfully submit an application for recognition of a media founder certification.
