A Look at Our Impact

Hello, everyone,

A few days ago, part of the team Médianesheaded to Athens to launch the next phase of Sphera, a European project we’ve been coordinating since October with all of our partners: StreetPress and ArtyFarty (France), VDNews and Dinamo (Italy), 444 (Hungary), El Salto (Spain), Krytyka Polityczna (Poland), Popaganda (Greece), and Europod (Belgium). The goal? To map out the project’s next steps and the framework for our collaboration in the coming months. Do you have questions about Sphera? You might find the answer here.

Next, we invite you to Point Éphémère on December 10 in Paris, starting at 7 p.m., for an event celebrating the latest season of our podcast *Chemins*. On the agenda: a look back at the past year and upcoming projects, a panel discussion with Sarah Ichou (Bondy Blog), Camélia Kheiredine (ARTE, formerly of Étiquette on France.tv Slash), and Alexandre Coing (Le Fooding), a chance to chat with the team over drinks, and a DJ set by Écoute Meuf!

This event will also be an opportunity to celebrate the 4th anniversary of Médianes. What have we accomplished since 2020? What impact have we made? For the first time, we’ve taken the time to step back and give you a glimpse into our initiatives, our values, and some of the media outlets we’re proud to support. Check out our first impact report in this issue.

This month, we’re also sharing a must-see event in January—the “Pays” party—talking about the Fediverse and paywalls, and, from the studio, giving you a behind-the-scenes look at our current collaborations.

Enjoy the read,

— Juliette Cahen, Editorial Manager at Médianes

Our impact report

Our first impact report highlights our actions across three key areas: our media, our consulting studio, and our European commitment with the Sphera network.

This report serves both as a review of past actions and a reflection on the challenges ahead. You’ll discover how [the organization] supportsMédianes a diversity of voices, transforms editorial and managerial practices, and works to promote independent, sustainable, and innovative journalism, both in France and across Europe. It’s also a way to give you a glimpse of the path that still lies ahead.

Decentralized internet: everything you need to know about the fediverse

Amid a loss of trust in social media and the companies that control them, the idea of a more open and decentralized Internet has gained traction. The “fediverse” embodies this hope. But how does it work, and can it live up to the expectations it has raised?

Backs to the wall: Why media outlets are betting on paywalls

More and more media outlets, such as CNN and Reuters, are choosing to lock their content behind a paywall. While this strategic shift is intended to offset declining advertising revenue and strengthen their independence, it raises questions about the impact on readers.

⟶ Back on the Campaign Trail with StreetPress and Vert
This fall, we’re supporting StreetPress in a membership drive aimed at recruiting 6,000 donors to strengthen its projects. At the same time, we’re supporting Vert with design and technical aspects to launch “Chaleurs actuelles,” a new column and newsletter dedicated to debunking the most dangerous narratives about the climate and humanity.

⟶ See you at the Sphera Media Lab

On January 23, we look forward to seeing you in Brussels for the latest edition of the Sphera Media Lab, an event organized by the members of Sphera—of which [name] isMédianes the coordinator—and European Lab. On the agenda: a day of discussions, workshops, and screenings to reaffirm the importance of independent media and their impact as pillars of democracy.

⟶ A Look at Beaux Arts Magazine

For several months now, we have been working with the digital team at Beaux Arts Magazine on the maintenance, monitoring, and development of new features for their website. We are delighted to present one aspect of the work we’ve done alongside the team: new sections designed to highlight their newsletter.

⟶ Coming soon: news about *La Disparition*

For the past few months, we’ve been working with the team behind the epistolary and political media outlet La Disparition on strategic and design initiatives. What’s on the agenda? A new epistolary product, of course (we can’t help ourselves). While we wait to tell you more, here’s a behind-the-scenes look at our collaboration.

For the past few days, the latest issue of *Pays*—a magazine co-founded by Médianes—dedicated to the Cotentin region has been available online and in bookstores.
