Let's wake up!

As the year comes to a close, here are a few New Year's resolutions. And some reflections on the past year, of course.

No. 72 — Wake up!
It's December 21, 2023, and you're reading the newsletter from Médianes.

Hello, everyone,

Tick-tock, tick-tock… in just a few days, 2023 will come to a close. For some of you, these final moments mark the home stretch before a well-deserved break. They can also be an opportunity to reflect on your accomplishments this year and think about your plans for the future (while making sure to unplug, of course). Here at [Company Name]Médianes, we’re thrilled to finally unveil the projects we’ve been working on for several months. For example, 2024 will mark the publication of our first book. We’ll also be opening applications for our mentorship program soon.

2024 is shaping up to be a very eventful year, following a 2023 that was full of twists and turns. As is customary at the end of the year, we’d like to take a moment to share some well-wishes with you, highlight a few topics that are close to our hearts, and offer some resources to help you explore them further.

Also in this issue: tips for more sustainable printing, predictions, games, and job listings, of course.

Enjoy the read,

— OWEN HUCHON, JOURNALIST AT MÉDIANES

Why not?

IDEAS FOR YOUR MEDIA

The media is navigating troubled waters. Despite the challenges it faces, it is persevering during a time that offers an opportunity to reaffirm its principles. As the year comes to a close, we would therefore like to highlight the issues we are committed to addressing.

Continue efforts on climate change

Promoting Inclusivity and Diversity

Cliquenism is a vice that the press struggles to shake off. According to a survey by the SNJ-CGT, 44% of the journalists surveyed said they had experienced discrimination based on their sex, gender, origin, religion, or age. It must be acknowledged that, on this issue, the independent press is far from setting a perfect example. Fortunately, organizations exist to provide support and guidance, such as AJAR, Prenons la Une, and AJL.

Apply sound management

The independent press is, once again, far from immune to the very flaws it seeks to expose, being itself a victim of a certain “left-wing boss syndrome.” In the coming year, we want to continue the work we’ve started on this topic and interview more newsrooms about their practices, as we’ve done previously with Mediapart and Contexte.

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT

Funding the largest participatory investigation into the far right: For nearly two months, Médianesprovided strategic and operational support to StreetPress for its fundraising campaign. From defining the framework and key messages to distributing newsletters, monitoring the donation platform, sponsoring content, and providing daily support… this year we continued and expanded our collaboration.

With an initial goal of €100,000, the campaign ended with a record total of more than €185,000 in donations. To learn more about our work with StreetPress since 2021, check out our case study.
