It's a secret

Hello, everyone,

This project has been in the works for a few months now. Today and tomorrow, my business partner Baptiste Thevelein and I will be joining about fifteen media executives—whose identities we won’t reveal—at a location that’s also being kept secret 🤫

This project is Media Off-Site, based on an original idea by Max Leroy more than a year ago, which came about over drinks with Benoit Zante, Quentin Franque, and Marion Wyss. Its visual identity was designed by our graphics team (Christelle Perrin and Maëlle Ledu).

The idea? To come together in a different setting—away from everyday topics and concerns—and in a confidential environment where we can take the time to reflect and discuss issues openly. These discussions will result in a report, available for download. We’re sharing the link with you so you won’t miss the publication as soon as it’s released.

Back to this issue: This month, read our interview with Rémi-Kenzo Pagès, one of the spokespersons for AJAR (Association of Anti-Racist and Raced Journalists), and a spotlight on media outlets that highlight journalists’ biographies. In our announcements, upcoming events, and summer activities, we’ve got work-study opportunities to join us in the fall, a look back at our collaboration with Disclose, and the launch of Vert’s campaign.

Are you in Paris? Stop by and see Baptiste this Friday at Spiil’s 15th-anniversary celebration. He’ll be speaking about future business models for the press. It’s a great opportunity to chat!

Enjoy the read,

— Marine Doux

OFF-SITE MEDIA

New Voices for the Industry

Depressing reports and analyses on the state of the media industry keep coming in, and we are often left on our own to grapple with the sector’s major challenges. But we believe that the future of the media must be shaped collectively: at Media Off-Site, media executives will find a space to share their challenges, to speak outside their newsrooms, and to take the time to reflect and debate openly.

What’s next? We’ll share a final report summarizing our proposals on 10 key industry issues. It will be available online for free so that everyone can access the conclusions of our discussions. Sign up so you don’t miss it!

AJAR: A Year in Retrospect

The Association of Anti-Racist and People of Color Journalists (AJAR) was founded to try to limit the spread of racist rhetoric in newsrooms and within the journalism profession. Rémi-Kenzo Pagès, one of the spokespeople, looks back on a year marked by rapid growth for the young association and several major media events.

Journalist biographies: how to engage your audience by bringing your media to life?

Although rarely used in France, biographies on news websites allow readers to learn more about the journalists behind the articles (their favorite topics, areas of expertise, journalistic ethics, etc.). Mediapart and The New York Times explain how this tool helps them build trust with their readers while encouraging engagement.
