JUNE 2025 ISSUE
"What do you do at ?Médianes"
Hello, everyone,
We hope you’re doing well as summer begins. As for us, we won’t hide our disappointment: the heat wave forced us to postpone the event scheduled for yesterday. We were really looking forward to seeing you all. It’s only a temporary delay—we’ll be in touch soon with a new date, under better conditions.
In the meantime, let’s dive into this edition of Coulisses. As we’re already getting ready for the new school year (and you probably are, too?), we wanted to take stock of our work and show you, in concrete terms, how we support independent media outlets—whether they’re emerging or well-established.
In this newsletter, we’ll be discussing crowdfunding campaigns, student journalists from “traditional” programs, the Sphera Open Call—our European mentorship program (applications close soon!) — and our appointment to the board of directors of Coop-médias.
Enjoy the read,
MATHILDE CARLIER, PROJECT MANAGER AT MÉDIANES

POST OF THE MONTH
"What are you doing here?Médianes"
A few weeks ago, we told you about our new mission: to strengthen independent journalism. But in practical terms, what are we doing to achieve this? And how do we support the media on a day-to-day basis?
In this post, we’ll take a look at the different aspects of our business, particularly those related to our consulting studio: marketing, web, design, financing… Find out how we work alongside independent media outlets, whether they’re just getting started or already well-established.

From the media's perspective
OUR LATEST PUBLICATIONS
What if journalism student journalists were the most traditional?
BY MARINE SLAVITCH — MÉDIANES
“Journalism isn’t just about writing.” In this column, Marine Slavitch explores why young journalists would benefit from also taking an interest in the broader context of their profession—design, funding, distribution, audience… All of these are key skills for remaining independent in the face of funders, platforms, and algorithms.
Frugal web design: the art of doing more with less
BY OWEN HUCHON — MÉDIANES
While the file size of web pages has tripled over the past decade, some websites are taking the opposite approach: designing for lightness, simplicity, and accessibility. This “low-tech” approach addresses environmental concerns, as well as issues of independence and efficiency. It’s another way of thinking about digital design.

Funding Your Media, the Other Way
Since 2020, we have been helping media outlets such as Fracas, StreetPress, and La Déferlante design and manage their fundraising, presale, and subscription campaigns.
We’ve even created a turnkey tool that makes it easy and affordable to create effective campaign pages. Engaging audiences, building loyalty, and establishing a sustainable model centered on your target audiences—a well-designed campaign makes all of this possible.
