Design
Since 2020, we have been supporting both emerging and established media outlets with their design and artistic direction, whether for the web or print. We believe that good design, beyond its visual appeal, serves as a bridge connecting a media outlet to its audience, bringing an editorial promise to life, and enhancing the reading experience. The concepts of service and user experience are therefore at the heart of our approach.
Are you looking to create or revamp your artistic direction, website, or print magazine? Tell us more about your project by filling out our form. We’ll get back to you shortly.
Our approach
In the media, design is often seen as the final piece of the puzzle when it comes to presenting what has been produced. At Médianes, we use it as a tool to attract and retain audiences.
This requires a reverse approach: we must first understand the media outlet’s goals and positioning, as well as its audience.
Our goal is to ensure maximum consistency between the media outlet’s content, form, and methods. Artistic direction brings the media outlet’s values and editorial line to the forefront, while the structure and hierarchy of the content guide readers toward key actions, such as signing up for a subscription and encourage them to stay by ensuring the content is a pleasure to read.
This approach is based on a deep understanding of the realities of the industry, where budgets are often limited. This drives us to tailor each proposal to actual needs. We also strive to make our deliverables understandable, adaptable, and usable, particularly through training on how to use the tools.
We share our vision and insights through roundtable discussions, design columns, and by teaching courses at schools and in our training programs.
Our services
To provide you with the best possible support, we offer the following services.
Visual Identity: Creation, Expansion, Harmonization, and Redesign
We have created visual identities from scratch for numerous media outlets: Pays, Vertige Média, Rural, La Disparition, Les Trois Ours, L’Intimiste, Entretien avec un dentiste… as well as for the Festival Imprimé, which we co-organized in 2022 and 2023, and the magazine Pays, which we co-founded in 2020. With Vertige Média, we wanted to incorporate several very vibrant colors to create a cheerful overall look that evokes the world of rock climbing, while remaining true to journalistic standards and providing guidelines that the team could apply independently.
The idea is always to strike the right balance—the fine line between different conflicting elements (serious, educational, and thoughtful, yet relaxed and joyful, for example)—by skillfully using the logo, fonts, colors, patterns, textures, and iconography, as well as the layout. Together, these disparate elements will form a recognizable identity that can represent the media outlet and its positioning.
When an organization has multiple style guides or design practices coexisting, we can step in to streamline, harmonize, and strengthen its visual identity. In 2025 and 2026, we helped La Croix reorganize its graphic guidelines through participatory workshops, surveys, a reorganization of departments, new and clearer rules, and about fifty concrete examples.
In 2025, we expanded AEF info’s artistic direction to develop a more detailed style guide for infographics.
We also regularly work to adapt and apply existing visual identities to the requirements and practices of the web—as we have done for Socialter, Vert, 60 Millions de consommateurs, La Déferlante, Fracas, Reporters Without Borders, and Tempura.
Printed Materials: Design and Layout
We support both emerging and established media outlets with their print design projects, including art direction, layout design, typesetting, consulting, and printing support. We have designed the layout for dozens of journals, magazines, books, newsletters, comic books, and reports, and have also created posters and flyers.
We are committed to designing mockups that will be practical for everyday use, without having to start from scratch every time. We want to serve our readers by providing them with materials that encourage reading. This means highlighting the content rather than making it visually difficult to access. Graphic design is a tool, a container—never the subject.
We co-founded our own magazine, *Pays*, and managed the entire graphic production process. As a result, we are familiar with the steps, technical constraints, and financial limitations involved in printing. This enables us to advise you on printers, paper types, formats, inks, and binding options, as well as on storage, routing, and shipping. We also understand the realities of production, distribution constraints, and print formats. We tailor our proposals to your timeline, your goals, and your budget.
For *La Disparition*, we conceived an epistolary format, drawing on the project’s combative nature, to give the layout a radical identity with a sense of urgency.
For *Créer un média*, our first book and practical guide, we chose a layout based on a grid of small 5×5 mm squares. On the cover, the lens curves like a flag, while the interior prioritizes readability with a rhythmic and clear structure. The book itself reflects our approach: making our learning accessible and equipping those who want to get started. Read about how we approached the graphic design of this book.
Website: Design and Redesign
The challenge is to design a platform that reflects the richness of the editorial project while ensuring consistency, accessibility, and clarity. This requires designing a seamless and authentic user experience. The prerequisites are understanding the site’s objectives and the purpose of each page, in order to establish the structure and prioritize possible actions. Technical specifications can also be established early on, and we work closely with developers to ensure that what we plan during the mockup phase is actually feasible.
In 2025, we led the UX redesign of the website for POLITICO, a media outlet specializing in political and institutional news: new navigation, clarified user journeys, and a redesigned hierarchy to highlight newsletters, podcasts, and key content—with a particular focus on consistency across desktop and mobile.
Over the years, we’ve worked with Vert to carry out several expansions and modifications to their website. In 2026, we conducted a complete redesign, combining artistic direction, UX, and UI to create a reorganized, more professional website that simplifies navigation and the discovery of new content, while highlighting the donation process.
For Socialter and *Philosophie magazine*, in 2026, we worked on visual and organizational redesigns to make the navigation and sections clearer, the articles more enjoyable to read, and to promote subscriptions.
For La Déferlante, with whom we have carried out several redesigns over the years, we designed the UI/UX, developed, and launched La Déferlante’s new website in 2024. This major redesign allowed us to rethink the entire user journey: simplified navigation, a unified storefront, a revamped presentation of subscription plans, an optimized checkout process, and enhanced visibility for editorial content and newsletters. We also implemented pre-sale campaigns for books, a glossary, an FAQ section, an enhanced “My Account” area, and a new homepage tailored to the outlet’s practices, resources, and needs.
We can also integrate prototypes, perform acceptance testing, and provide maintenance. Learn more about our Tech & Product services.
Newsletter: Creation and Redesign
Email is a tool that has changed very little over the past few decades. We understand how it works, its limitations, and its capabilities, and we follow best practices to ensure that newsletters reach recipients intact, display consistently across all devices, and are easy for teams to edit and send.
Typically using Mailchimp and Brevo, we draw on existing visual identity elements and proposed newsletter layouts to develop graphic designs that emphasize readability and clarity of content.
In the spring of 2024, the team at Les Jours reached out to us to design their new editorial newsletter, Scrountch. The goal: to create a cohesive, accessible, and distinctive layout that aligns with the publication’s visual identity. We developed an open layout featuring a recurring pattern, sections that are instantly recognizable, and typographic elements that make for quick and easy reading.
We've redesigned and created dozens of newsletters for La Déferlante, Louie Média, The Conversation, TheMetaNews, Les Trois Ours, Entretien avec un dentiste, L'Intimiste… and, of course, our own newsletters Médianes, Sphera, and Pays.
Social Media: Guidelines and Templates
Many media outlets (and we ourselves!) are active on social media. The goal is often to ensure that communication doesn’t take up too much time; to achieve this, we can adapt visual identities to fit social media conventions, develop guidelines, and create templates that teams can reuse.
We have partnered with Vert, the CDJM, Entretien avec un dentiste, L'herbier parisien, Le Festival imprimé, Green Cards, le Printemps écologique and, of course, Médianes, Pays and Sphera.
Infographics and Cartography
To clarify numbers, distances, or scales, we can create data visualizations in the form of graphs of varying complexity, maps, and diagrams, depending on the datasets.
Since 2019, we have created these for Libération, Pays, Oxfam, the Forum vies mobiles, Thiga, and the National Commission for Public Debate, always with the goal of simplifying access to information, while adhering to—and adapting, when necessary—the publisher’s visual identity.
